TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR MENTOR TRAINING

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) utilized federal funds for the training of over 300 beginning teacher mentors and 50 mentors of beginning administrators. Training was also provided to the eleven project directors. Mentors receive training throughout the school year from the New Teacher Center (NTC) at the University of California, Santa Cruz based on NTC models for teacher and school leader induction. The NTC has over 20 years of experience training mentors throughout the United States.

Oregon’s Beginning Teacher and Administrator Mentor Program provides two levels of training—one for experienced teachers and administrators and a second track, for new teachers and administrators.  NTC training revolves around the components of professional development and assessment. The ongoing training provides practical tools for new teachers and administrators.  In addition to the trainings, mentors are regularly in touch with the new teachers and administrators providing guidance, troubleshooting and observation all with the goal of supporting teachers (and administrators) in their profession.

The ultimate goal of the program is to enhance new teachers and administrators practice to improve student learning.
