The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is responsible for statewide curriculum and instruction programs, school improvement efforts, and Oregon's statewide assessment testing system. The Oregon Department of Education administers the Beginning Teacher and Administrator Mentor Program thanks to legislation and funding received during the 2007 Legislative session. ODE, in partnership with the New Teacher Center (NTC) at the University of California, Santa Cruz, provides training for all teacher and administrator mentors at locations across the state based on NTC mentor models. The eleven school districts and Educational Service Districts serve as the local Partnership Project Leads and tailor the program to their specific communities. The Chalkboard Project developed and manages MentoringEducators.org in partnership with ODE. The Chalkboard Project is an independent, non-partisan organization formed in 2004 by Oregon’s leading philanthropic foundations to explore the challenges facing our K-12 public schools and seek solutions. Chalkboard merges research with public opinion to make Oregon’s schools among the best in the nation. For more information about Chalkboard, visit www.chalkboardproject.org.
In response to the expressed need for clear information about mentoring programs and an increased focus on and resources for math and science educators, the Boeing Company provided a grant to the Chalkboard Project to develop the “educating mentors” website. Boeing's education investments focus on quality learning environments for children and in parent/caregiver training that ensures children entering school are ready to learn, while investments in primary and secondary teacher development and school leadership create school systems that are effective in preparing students for work and life. The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation's Education and Youth Engagement Programs enhance the ways children prepare for learning; test new models within the K-12 public education system; and expand opportunities for youth to develop new interests, skills, and abilities. The Foundation believes all children deserve the benefit of a high-quality education. Public education offers a pathway for children to grow up to be curious, inventive, and productive. The Foundation seeks to improve opportunities for young people through the support and mentoring of new teachers at public schools. In addition, the Foundation supports schools that are testing new models of education that improve learning outcomes for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
